Why Zoned HVAC Systems Are a Smart Investment for Florida Homeowners

Why Zoned HVAC Systems Are a Smart Investment for Florida Homeowners

Lennox Zoning System

Across Palm Beach, from the upscale boutiques along Worth Avenue to the vibrant cafés of Clematis Street, residents are embracing zoned HVAC in South Florida as the next evolution in indoor comfort. This modern approach divides your residence into distinct climate zones, granting you granular control over temperature and humidity in each area.

Hopkins Air Conditioning, Inc. stands as Florida’s leading HVAC experts, guiding you through how HVAC zoning benefits your lifestyle, enhances energy efficiency, and elevates indoor well-being in your household.

South Florida Homes Have Unique Cooling Challenges

When outdoor humidity regularly soars above 90%, your air conditioning system faces a relentless battle against moisture and muggy air.

High moisture levels not only make rooms feel warmer but also encourage mold growth and stale odors. You need a solution that actively combats humidity while maintaining cool, crisp conditions throughout your residence.

What Is a Zoned HVAC System?

A zoned HVAC system uses motorized dampers installed in your ductwork to route conditioned air to specific areas.

Each zone features its own thermostat, communicating with a central control panel to call for heating or cooling only where it’s needed.

Instead of one uniform temperature, you gain tailored comfort in living rooms, bedrooms, or bonus spaces without affecting the whole house.

Benefits of Zoned HVAC for South Florida Homeowners

Southern Florida temperatures run as much as ten degrees higher than those farther north, intensifying the demand for precise cooling.

Zoning addresses this disparity by focusing resources on the rooms you occupy, reducing wasted energy in under-used areas.

The result is a more consistently comfortable environment, even as heat and humidity peak outside.

Personalized Comfort by Room or Zone

With zoning, you enjoy unprecedented control over your house’s climate. You can set your master suite to a soothing 72°F while keeping guest rooms at a more economical 78°F.

This flexibility ensures that every family member or guest experiences their ideal comfort level without compromise.

Lower Energy Bills

AC zoning in Palm Beach helps you trim your utility expenses by limiting conditioned air to occupied zones.

When you aren’t paying to cool an empty home office or rarely used sunroom, your air conditioner runs less often, translating into noticeable savings on your monthly statement.

Less Wear and Tear on Your HVAC System

By cooling only designated sections, your system avoids constant full-capacity cycles.

Reduced run times and fewer on-off transitions mean less mechanical stress, extending the lifespan of your equipment and lowering the frequency of costly HVAC repairs.

Works Great with Smart Thermostats

Zoned HVAC systems pair seamlessly with smart HVAC systems, enabling you to program schedules, monitor energy usage, and adjust settings remotely via mobile apps.

This integration maximizes HVAC zoning benefits by ensuring your home is always ready to welcome you at the perfect temperature.

Is a Zoned HVAC System Right for Your Home?

Houses with open floor plans, multilevel layouts, or rooms that receive dissimilar sun exposure are ideal candidates for zoning.

If you find certain areas perpetually too warm or cold despite frequent thermostat tweaks, a zoned system can balance these discrepancies. Even smaller residences benefit when you want to avoid overcooling unused sections.

Cost vs. Value: Why It’s Worth the Investment

Installing a zoned HVAC infrastructure involves an upfront investment for dampers, wiring, and additional thermostats. However, the combination of reduced energy consumption, lower utility bills, and extended equipment life generates a compelling return.

Over time, your savings on air-conditioning costs can offset installation expenses, making your system more cost-effective than standard single-zone setups.

Why You Should Have Your Ducts Cleaned Before Summer

Why You Should Have Your Ducts Cleaned Before Summer

Air ducts can collect dirt and spread it through your home each time you turn on your air conditioner. Living in Florida, you most likely run your AC a lot, meaning a greater chance of contaminants spreading through your home’s air. We recommend regular duct cleaning to remove all the filth and help improve your indoor air quality while extending the useful life of your cooling system.

Even better, you can have your ducts cleaned before the really hot summer months hit and you start increasing your AC use. Having clean ducts, especially before the summer when you use your AC the most, is so important for the following reasons.

It Improves the Efficiency of Your AC

Dust, dirt, pollen, and even pest droppings can reduce the energy efficiency of your air conditioning unit, as the air in your home is filtered, cooled, and recirculated by the AC system. When your air filter becomes clogged, your AC unit has to work harder to pull enough air into the system, resulting in low airflow through your vents and high energy bills. Getting your air ducts cleaned (and keeping up with filter changes) can help prevent air filter clogs and help reduce the risk of excessive wear and tear on your AC.

It Improves Your Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air can be up to six times more polluted than outdoor air. Most AC filters are designed to remove these particles, which is why regular filter changes are critical. Unfortunately, if the filter is old or clogged, those particles can move into your air ducts, where they form a coating of filth that can be recirculated through the air and inhaled by the occupants.

It Extends the Life of Your AC

Having your air ducts cleaned and your air conditioner regularly repaired and maintained by the Hopkins team can extend your system’s useful life. When you have your air ducts cleaned regularly, you are preventing clogging issues that can cause the unit to work harder, use more electricity, and wear out faster.

At Hopkins Air Conditioning, you can count on us to thoroughly clean your air ducts before summer starts to make sure your AC runs efficiently, your air is clean, and you’re cool and comfortable in your home. To set up a duct cleaning service, reach out to us today.

Why Do Air Conditioning Systems Get More Expensive?

Why Do Air Conditioning Systems Get More Expensive?

South Florida’s climate can be particularly scorching, which is why it’s important to have a reliable air conditioning system you can depend on. But what’s with the expensive cost of air conditioners? Like many residents in Palm Beach County, you’ve probably realized your air conditioning systems have become increasingly expensive over time.

Let’s delve into why AC prices are on the rise and explore how you can make the most cost-effective and efficient decision when it comes to your cooling system.

Understanding the Rising Cost of Air Conditioning Systems

Global events, such as the pandemic, have had a significant financial impact on businesses across the board, including small businesses. Labor, material, and energy costs are key factors contributing to the increasing cost of air conditioning systems.

How? The economy often affects essential components and resources needed for AC manufacturing and installation, mainly inflation of prices. Paired with skilled labor costs for a technician, these changes can greatly impact the price of purchasing, installing, and maintaining your AC.

And with the rise in the production of energy-efficient AC systems that benefit both buyers and the environment, the price tag of AC systems continues to rise.

While these upfront costs can quickly add up, there are solutions to help you combat the high sticker price for a cleaner and more energy-efficient home.

Ways To Keep AC Costs Low

While the rise in AC expenses can seem stressful, there are ways to keep your AC costs low by managing your expenses effectively. Taking advantage of tax rebates and incentives to help offset the rising cost of ACs is probably the most effective solution in terms of price impact.

Trying to upgrade your home with energy-efficient equipment? The Inflation Reduction Act makes it more affordable for families to purchase new systems while saving money on their monthly utility bills.

The year 2023 is slated for an increase in income tax credit, with access to new rebates. This means families can make home energy-saving improvements while supporting cleaner energy consumption.

Looking for another effective way to keep your AC costs low? Invest in regular maintenance plans. Regular maintenance helps prolong the life span of your cooling equipment and helps keep it operating at peak efficiency throughout the year.

Where & When Ductless HVAC Systems Can Be Used

Where & When Ductless HVAC Systems Can Be Used

When it comes to choosing the right air conditioning system for your home, one of the primary considerations for most people is the SEER rating. The SEER rating is a quick and convenient way to compare different systems. It also helps judge their efficiency and effectiveness. SEER is an acronym for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio”. It refers to a particular unit’s cooling output during a typical season, divided by the number of Watt-Hours of energy it uses.

Similar to Miles Per Gallon in a Car

SEER is basically a fuel-efficiency rating for your air conditioner. It is like miles per gallon for a motor vehicle. The fuel efficiency of a motor vehicle can vary widely based on how it is operated, and that is true for an air conditioner too. Regardless of the unit’s SEER rating, if it is constantly being run at full power or the homeowner changes the thermostat setting all the time, forcing the unit to work harder than it should, actual performance might not be in line with the rating.

Modern AC Units Have 13 or 14 Minimum SEER Ratings

The requirements for new AC units vary from state to state, but most states have a minimum SEER requirement of 13 or 14 and maximums might range up to between 21 and 25. Older units might have SEER ratings as low as eight or nine, so most modern AC units are significantly more efficient.

If you’re looking for a new AC unit for use in your home or business, you can trust the experienced technicians at Hopkins Air Conditioning, Inc. in West Palm Beach to help you evaluate the options available. We’ll be happy to examine the space you want to keep cool and suggest an AC that’s right for your comfort and your budget. We also have the expertise to handle other areas of your home comfort. Where & When Ductless HVAC Systems Can Be Used

Where & When Ductless HVAC Systems Can Be Used

Ductless heat pumps and ductless mini-splits provide energy-efficient heating and cooling. These HVAC systems perform especially well in hot climates where winter temperatures don’t fall drastically, which makes them perfect for Florida homes.

Installing a ductless HVAC system can help you reduce the number of hot or cold spots in your home without expanding the existing ductwork. Plus, adding a ductless mini-split can create a zoned HVAC system in your home, which helps keep every room at the optimal temperature.

The Best Places for Ductless HVAC Systems in Your Home

Adding a ductless HVAC system makes a lot of sense when you’re looking to improve the comfort of a space where expanding your home’s ductwork would be difficult. Common places in the house that are ideal for a mini-split are:

  • Sunrooms
  • Individual rooms
  • Small condos or studio apartments
  • Attics or basement living spaces
  • Garages and workshops
  • Additions

Are you in the West Palm Beach area and looking to reduce the strain on your central AC system? Installing a new ductless system can help improve the efficiency of your central air conditioner. Call today to schedule ductless HVAC services in Palm Beach County.

Benefits of Installing Ductless HAVC Systems

A ductless heat pump provides precise control of the indoor temperature in a specific room or space. In larger homes, you can control the temperature in the room you use the most while limiting heating and cooling in unused rooms. Zoned heating and cooling typically reduce power consumption.

Ducts act as thermal radiators that shed some of the air’s temperature before it reaches your room. Ductless systems don’t experience this thermal loss and therefore can process air with less power.

Fast Installation

Because no air ducts need to be built, the installation team at Hopkins Air Conditioning, Inc. can quickly install ductless systems at your home in West Palm Beach, FL. We sell a variety of ductless heat pump models from Lennox, one of the top brands in the industry.

Our NATE-certified technicians can mount the units and connect the electricity in accordance with building codes.

Get the Most Out of Your Home’s Space

If hot and cold spots in your home have been interfering with your comfort, then a ductless system will provide year-round comfort. This heating and cooling technology also makes it possible to expand your living and working areas. You might even add an income-producing apartment in your existing home.

Trust Us for Indoor Comfort

Hopkins Air Conditioning, Inc. is a family-owned company with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. We repair and install heating systems, air conditioners, and ductless systems. At What Temperature Do Heat Pumps Become Ineffective?

At What Temperature Do Heat Pumps Become Ineffective?

Heat pumps are a popular choice for heating and cooling homes, particularly in climates like Florida. They provide an energy-efficient alternative to traditional HVAC systems.

However, heat pumps lose efficiency as the temperature drops. This is because they have to work harder to draw heat from the outside air. As a result, they may not be able to keep your home warm at below-freezing temperatures.

Overall, heat pumps are a great option for Florida homeowners who want an energy-efficient way to heat and cool their homes.

How Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps operate by transferring heat from one place to another. During winter, they extract heat from the outdoor air and transfer it inside your home. Conversely, they remove heat from your home in the summer to cool it down. This highly energy-efficient process makes heat pumps a great option for temperature regulation.

Best Climate for Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are most effective in climates that rarely experience temperatures below freezing. For instance, the average winter temperature ranges from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit in Florida, making it an ideal location for heat pump installation.

They’re less effective in colder climates, where temperatures frequently drop below freezing. Heat pumps can handle outdoor temperatures down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit and become less effective around 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Benefits of Installing Heat Pumps

Installing a heat pump in your home is a smart and efficient choice in Florida, where the climate is warm and mild. Heat pumps are versatile, providing cooling and heating solutions perfect for Florida’s tropical weather. They’re ideal for homeowners who want a single system to manage indoor temperatures all year.

If you’re building a new home or upgrading your existing HVAC system, consider a heat pump. It’s a step toward a more sustainable, comfortable, and cost-effective home environment.

There are several benefits to installing a heat pump in your Florida home, including:

  • Energy efficiency: Heat pumps are known for their energy efficiency, reducing utility bills.

What Is Freon and Is It Important for Your AC System?

What Is Freon and Is It Important for Your AC System?

Invented in 1928, Freon was one of the first and most popular brands of refrigerants for air conditioning systems and refrigerators. While Freon has been phased out since 2010 due to environmental concerns, it’s still important to understand its history. Here’s a closer look at Freon, plus everything you need to know about refrigerants for your AC system today.

What Is Freon?

Freon is a brand name of refrigerant, technically known as R-22. Once touted as the “miracle compound,” Freon is a mix of several different chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which are now known to deplete the ozone layer rapidly. Due to environmental concerns, Freon has been phased out from air conditioning systems since 2010.

In the 1990s, a new refrigerant called Puron (R-410A) was introduced, and it was considered to be eco-friendly. If you have an older air conditioning system, chances are it uses Puron (R-410A), not Freon. Unfortunately, scientists soon discovered that Puron wasn’t much better than Freon for the environment. As part of a global climate initiative, Puron (R-410A) is currently being phased out and replaced by the more environmentally friendly refrigerants R-454B and R-32.

How Does Refrigerant Work in Your AC System?

Behind the scenes of Florida homes, refrigerants are at work inside AC systems, absorbing heat, turning heat into gas, and moving heat outside, where it’s finally released. Refrigerants accomplish all of this by circulating through a closed-loop system. Because it’s a closed-loop system, the amount of refrigerant inside your AC should always remain at the same level. Having the right amount of refrigerant from the start is critical to your AC’s proper functioning.

The refrigeration cycle is as follows:

  1. The refrigerant first moves through the evaporator coil, where it absorbs heat and evaporates into a gas.
  2. Then, it moves to the compressor, where the gas is compressed and increases in pressure and temperature.
  3. Next, it moves to the condenser coil, where heat is released and the refrigerant condenses into liquid.
  4. The refrigerant moves to the expansion valve, where pressure is removed from the liquid. This allows it to turn back into vapor in the evaporator, beginning the cycle again.

Why Is Refrigerant Important?

Without refrigerant — and the precise amount of refrigerant in your system — air conditioning systems cannot function. When your AC contains an insufficient supply of refrigerant due to a line leak or improper installation, it won’t be able to cool your home well. This will cause other problems, including increased energy bills, frozen coils, and compressor failure.

This is why early detection and repair of leaks (and other issues) is critical to your AC system’s health. Catching problems early can save you money on repairs while helping you avoid more extensive damage.

Most importantly, while Freon has been outlawed from AC systems for decades, Puron (R-410A) is still in the process of being phased out. This means there’s a good chance your AC uses Puron. Fortunately, the phase-out process is gradual. You’ll be able to use your system for the remainder of its life.

What Homeowners Need to Know About Freon/Puron Replacement

Unfortunately, the systems that still rely on R-410A will likely face increasing repair costs as its supply becomes scarce during the phase-out process. If your system uses Puron, you can mitigate rising repair costs by scheduling routine maintenance with our AC technicians. Professional maintenance, including regularly replacing dirty air filters, replacing/repairing worn components, and catching leaks early, can keep your old HVAC system functioning smoothly for longer.

Depending on your system’s age, you may be wondering about retrofitting your old AC to accommodate a new type of refrigerant. Unfortunately, retrofitting is not a cost-effective option for homeowners because it’s an extensive, complicated, and expensive process involving the replacement of several major AC components.

For these reasons, we recommend upgrading your old AC system to an eco-friendly model with an environmentally sound refrigerant such as R-454B or R-32. A new, more energy-efficient AC system will save you money in repairs and energy bills and give you years of peace of mind.

Hopkins Air Conditioning is here to help you navigate this transition process. Our BBB A+ Rated team is NCI- and NATE-certified to provide top-level AC installation, repair, and maintenance services for residents in Palm Beach County and beyond. You can count on our expertise to help you transition to newer refrigerants and systems for better energy efficiency.

Common Causes of AC Refrigerant Leaks

Common Causes of AC Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant leaks in your air conditioning can be a major issue, leading to reduced efficiency, higher energy bills, and potential system damage. Moreover, leaving refrigerant leaks unchecked can have serious consequences for your health if inhaled and can be harmful to the environment.

Addressing refrigerant leaks promptly is the best way to protect your health and safety, save money, and extend the lifespan of your cooling equipment.

In this blog post, the air conditioning experts at Hopkins Air Conditioning, Inc. discuss the common causes of refrigerant leaks, how to identify them, and the importance of timely repairs.

What Causes Refrigerant Leaks?

There are several things that can lead your air conditioner to leak refrigerant, the most common of which being:

  • Wear and tear: Over time, your air conditioner’s coils, hoses, and fittings can degrade due to general wear and tear, leading to small holes or cracks that can leak refrigerant.
  • Corrosion: Moisture and dirt in the system can cause internal parts to corrode, especially in older air conditioners, leading to refrigerant leaks over time.
  • Poor installation and maintenance: Improperly installed AC systems or inadequate maintenance can cause poor seals or faulty connections, leading to refrigerant leaks.
  • Vibration: Natural vibrations during normal use can wear down seals and connections over time, leading to leaks in your refrigerant line.
  • Physical damage: Accidental impacts or mishandling can damage refrigerant lines or coils externally, leading to leaks.

How to Identify AC Refrigerant Leaks

It’s important to be able to identify the signs of a potential refrigerant leak so you can get the problem addressed promptly. Signs of a potential refrigerant leak often include:

  • Reduced efficiency: AC systems that run but don’t cool effectively may have a refrigerant leak to blame.
  • Icy coils: Frozen evaporator coils are often caused by insufficient refrigerant levels that could be low due to a leak.
  • Hissing sounds: If you hear a hissing sound near your air conditioner, it could be refrigerant escaping through a crack in the refrigerant line.
  • High bills: Refrigerant leaks, which cause the AC to work harder than necessary, could cause higher-than-normal cooling bills.
  • Oil stains: Refrigerant leaks are often accompanied by oil stains around the coils or refrigerant lines.

The Importance of Prompt Refrigerant Repair

Fixing a refrigerant leak fast is imperative, as leaving this issue untreated can cause more damage to your air conditioner, leading to costly repairs and premature replacements.

Leaks can decrease your air conditioner’s efficiency and force the system to work harder, leading to higher energy bills. By investing in prompt repairs now, you can help extend your unit lifespan and ensure optimal performance on the hottest days of the year.

When to Replace Refrigerant

It’s important to know when it’s time to replace your refrigerant so you can prevent disruptions to your indoor comfort. If your air conditioner has been running on low refrigerant for a long time, it may need a recharge to restore its cooling capacity.

Additionally, if your system still relies on R-22 refrigerant, it may be a good idea to upgrade as these materials get phased out. R-410A refrigerant is the new standard, and understanding the difference is important for maintaining your AC system’s efficiency.

If you’re unsure whether your refrigerant needs to be recharged or replaced, don’t hesitate to contact a professional for assistance. Incorrect handling can result in lasting damage and unsafe conditions, so it’s always best to trust a certified technician.

Why Is My AC Dripping Water? Causes & Solutions

Why Is My AC Dripping Water? Causes & Solutions

Leaking air conditioners are a common problem homeowners face, especially during the heat of summer when the system is working overtime to keep your home cool. Understanding the causes of an AC leak can help you prevent the problem or correct it quickly.

5 Common Causes of Your AC Dripping Water

There are several reasons your air conditioner may start leaking water and subsequently break down. These are the five most common:

A Clogged Condensate Line

The condensate drain line is used along with a condensate drain pan to remove excess moisture produced by your air conditioner as it cools your home. It’s not uncommon for dirt and debris to get trapped in the condensate drain line and cause a clog.

Mold and mildew can also grow, which can lead to a blocked condensate drain line. No matter the cause, a blocked condensate line can lead to an overflowing drain pan, which may cause water damage to your home and damage to your AC.

You can remove a clog in your condensate line with a wet/dry vac, or you can call a professional like those at Hopkins Air Conditioning. The best way to prevent these clogs is by scheduling professional air conditioning maintenance each spring.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

Another cause could be frozen evaporator coils. Low refrigerant or dirt buildup can lead to ice buildup on your coils, which will then cause your AC to leak as the ice melts.

Scheduling an annual tune-up and inspection each spring is a great way to ensure your system has adequate refrigerant and doesn’t have excessive dirt or debris clogging the coils, which in turn will protect your system from frozen evaporator coils.

Leaking Refrigerant

If your air conditioner has a refrigerant leak, it can cause your coils to freeze, and then as the ice melts, your AC will leak. Other signs you have a refrigerant leak include excessive indoor humidity, warm air from your vents, or a hissing sound from your air conditioner.

At the first sign of a refrigerant leak, you should turn off your system and call a professional to inspect and repair your air conditioner.

Dirty Air Filter

When your air filters are dirty and clogged, they restrict airflow to the evaporator coils, which can cause them to freeze, leading to water leaks. It’s best to change your air filters frequently, usually every 30 to 60 days depending on your system and filter type.

The Drain Pan Is Rusted or Cracked

If your drain pan is damaged or showing signs of rust, it may not work properly and lead to water leaking into your home. The best way to prevent this is to replace your drain pan as soon as it appears cracked or otherwise compromised.
